How engine tuning works on a petrol BMW X5

Petrol engines are remapped by refining fuelling, ignition timing and, on turbocharged engines, boost control. Done carefully this releases performance the manufacturer left in reserve, giving sharper throttle response and a stronger top end.

Of the 7 petrol X5 engines in our data, this one comes 7th for power gain, which is 8 bhp below the X5 petrol average of 26 bhp.

Across our whole catalogue the average petrol remap adds 27 bhp and 51 Nm, so this engine's 18 bhp and 50 Nm sits below that benchmark.
